Greek Language Info
Modern Greek is the official language of the Hellenic Republic, popularly known as Greece. However, Greek is spoken not only in Greece and Cyprus but also by Greek minorities in adjacent countries as well as millions of Greek emigrants around the world.
Although the number of native speakers ranks low in the list of world languages, Greek language is characterized by its very high culturally importance, as the Western thought was profoundly shaped by the Greek civilization and ethos.
The pedigree of Greek language can be traced through about 4,000 years to ancient Athens, Trojan wars and Greek mythology as indeed to most of the first written European historical, cultural and scientific records.
Ancient Hellenes spoke and wrote various dialects. Based on the Attic dialect, the common Greek language began to take shape from 4th century BCE and became the official international language of this era, spoken in Greece, the Orient and many other countries.
From 4th to 15th century Greek was the official language of the Byzantine Empire, thereafter continued to be spoken by Greeks under Ottoman rule. In the 19th century Modern Greek became the official language of the Kingdom of Greece.
The Greek alphabet dates from about 1,000 BCE and was the first one with letters for vowels as well as for consonants, containing 15 single consonants, 2 double consonants and 7 vowels. As there is no other language based on Greek the alphabet (sometimes mistook for Cyrillic), processing of Greek text on PC systems requires specially designed software and fonts.
